About
The Design Challenge was to come up with high-fidelity prototypes that can enable the below-mentioned 5 things, but I had to prioritize and decide what the home screen should have. Along with these 5 features, I had to create a bottom navigation bar and take a call on what should be in the bottom navigation.
The Problem
During pregnancy and after pregnancy there are a lot of uncertainties due to which there has been a lot of fear around childbirth
Access to proper professional consultation and access during emergencies in very crucial situations is necessary for pregnancy
Pandemic has affected healthcare service with a lot of uncertainty and fear and for pregnancies, it has been even more worse
Accessibility to professional healthcare practitioners would improve the state of mind of new parents or parents to be
Ultimately also would optimize the healthcare practitioner’s time.
The Goal
To design a home screen for a maternity app that should allow the user to:
- Monitor pregnancy progress
- Learn & understand the symptoms of pregnancy
- Book consultation with doctors (video or otherwise)
- Book lab tests & scans
- Access reports & prescriptionsÂ
Target Users
- Primary Users: Pregnant Women and new mothers
- Secondary Users: Doctors
Understanding the User
Some women crave pickles during pregnancy; others crave ice cream. Some women even crave a concoction of the two. But there’s one thing that all women crave
during pregnancy: knowledge.
It was first important to empathize with the women who are expecting to be a mom soon or have recently experienced a pregnancy. With limited time in hand, I prepared a quick questionnaire to interview one of my friends to understand the experience first-hand.
User Interviews
Interview Time: 15 mins
Medium: Phone call

Can you describe how did you know about your pregnancy?
"Missing a period cycle is an obvious symptom. I am also sensitive to my body changes so when I started feeling nauseated, I got myself a pregnancy test kit."
How did you learn and understand the symptoms of pregnancy?
"I have watched enough daily soaps to know that vomiting is a sign of pregnancy. I also googled 'Why I missed my period' and learned about the pregnancy symptoms in detail."
How did you monitor your pregnancy after the confirmation?
"I went to a gynecologist near my home and she suggested all the routine check-ups for 9 months. I watched a lot, A LOT of YouTube videos and read articles online, downloaded a few mobile applications."
What was the most important thing for you to track during your pregnancy?
"For me, it was most important to see how many weeks have passed and what are the symptoms for my current week. We usually get busy and can't track weeks on our own. I also looked out for self-care, baby care, and food habits for the ongoing week in the mobile application."
How often did you consult a doctor during your pregnancy?
"I used to visit my gynecologist every month for routine check-ups. But it was convenient to use the online doctor consultation on the app as they are available all the time and don't feel irritated by small questions."
Can you prioritize these features according to your preference: Book consultation with doctors, Book lab tests & scans, Access reports & prescriptions.
Book consultation with doctors | Book lab tests & scans because it's always crowded on the spot. | Access reports & prescriptions.
Empathy Map
I created an Empathy Map to derive insights from the interview and gain a deeper empathy for pregnant women so that I can design a good user experience.
Secondary Research
I also performed some secondary research to solidify my approach to the problem. Some quantitative data collected from the research are:
- The use of apps for health information declined as the pregnancy progressed from 70% (35/50) in the first trimester to 41.3% (143/346) in the third
trimester. - The main reason for using an app was to monitor fetal development (436/535, 81.5%), followed by learning about nutrition and recording diet in
pregnancy (140/535, 26.2%). - The women highly appreciated the evidence-based information, expert opinions, and tailored advice available on apps.
- Pregnant women and those with young children place a high value on the information and support they receive from using online sources and communities.
- The use of apps for health information declined as the pregnancy progressed from 70% (35/50) in the first trimester to 41.3% (143/346) in the third

Ideas & Priority
After the research, I gathered a lot of insights and further collated the ideas, and did prioritization based on impact VS effort analysis.
Solution
I will be considering Mom-to-be patients target users.
Considering all the information I will be building a maternity mobile app that should :
- App should be able to book appointments with doctors
- Monitor pregnancy progress
- Learn and understand symptoms of pregnancy
- Â Book Lab test
- Access reports and prescriptions
Defining Tasks:
– Open the app
– Login
– Chose from Mom-to-be | New Mom
– Home page is curated based on the option chosen
– Book an appointment with the doctor
– Emergency appointment booking
– Monitor pregnancy progress
– Symptoms monitor
– Book for tests
– Access reports and prescriptions
